Why do I need to have my chimney inspected and cleaned? 
The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and National Fire Prevention Agency (NFPA) recommend getting your chimney swept and inspected by a CSIA certified chimney technician annually. Annual sweeping is done to prevent the build-up of any creosote inside your chimney flue. Creosote build up is combustible and can be a serious fire hazard if not taken care of. Visual chimney inspections are conducted to make sure any potential issues with your chimney system are caught and dealt with before they become larger. These measures aid in keeping your chimney system running safely and efficiently.
What does a chimney inspection entail?
Once your chimney flue has been brushed clean, a CSIA-certified chimney technician will begin their inspection. If your chimney system hasn’t had any structural changes or previous hazard issues, the chimney technician will likely perform a Level I chimney inspection. This type of inspection includes inspection of readily accessible parts of the chimney’s interior and exterior. This includes the firebox, the masonry, and the flue. The chimney technician will also check for any obstructions in the chimney flue. Once the inspection is complete, any concerns will be addressed. If these concerns deemed critical to the function of your chimney, your chimney technician may want to perform a Level II or Level III inspection as well.
