Have you ever noticed little pieces of brick laying on top of your roof? You probably were able to figure out pretty quickly that these little pieces probably detached from your chimney. We are experts when it comes to dealing with chipping brickwork, also known as spalling. We want to let you know how we can help you with your spalling issues.
What causes spalling?
Moisture is very tough on your brickwork. When it rains and snows, moisture can rest on your bricks and seep into tiny pores in your masonry. If this water sits in your brickwork until winter, the water can freeze and expand. This freeze/thaw process weakens and chips your bricks. Faulty or missing components like your chimney cap or crown also enhance your spalling issue.
How do I remedy spalling?
Little chips detaching from your brickwork is an indicator of a larger problem. Spalling puts your chimney in danger of collapsing. That’s why catching spalling issues early and fixing the problem right away could save you thousands of dollars and help you avoid a serious safety hazard.
It is important to have your chimney inspected by a Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) certified chimney technician. We here at The Chimney Guy are certified and can help you with your spalling issue. After our inspection, if the spalling is in the beginning stages, our technician will seal the chimney, protecting it from any further moisture penetration. In addition, if you do not already have a chimney cap, our technician will install one for further moisture protection. If the problem is advanced, our technicians perform masonry repair by replacing deteriorated brickwork and potentially the crown of your chimney.
It is important to prevent more moisture damage after resolving the spalling issue. If you notice that your chimney cap is damaged or that there are brick chips on your roof, call us to have it looked at. It is also very important that you have annual chimney inspection performed by a CSIA certified chimney technician.
